Award brings emotion
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott held the annual Christmas banquet Saturday, December 17, 2011. During the event, many awards were handed out, and one in particular stood out and deserved to be recognized and honored.
Two weeks ago, the Sheriff’s Foundation board members met to choose the recipient of this award, and before Lott announced the winner of the Deputy of the Year Award he stated, “God works in mysterious ways.” The award went to Master Deputy Warren Cavanagh who lost his partner, Fargo, last week. Fargo was killed in the line of duty by a robbery suspect.
It was an emotional moment when Cavanagh walked up to receive his award. The room broke out into a thunderous applause, and all rose to their feet to honor a deputy who has indeed worked hard and unselfishly for the citizens of Richland County. It was difficult for the audience to watch the pain Cavanagh was dealing with as he approached, but those present could also feel the strength he was receiving from his entire Richland County Sheriff's Department family.
Master Deputy Cavanagh came to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in 2006 from the office of Inspector General with the State of South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. He has been in law enforcement since 2002 and began handling K-9’s in 2004.
