Highlanders beat OP, advance
The Heathwood Hall girls’ tennis team swept every singles and doubles match against the Orangeburg Prep Indians Monday, October 17 at the Heathwood tennis courts in the first round of the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA) state playoffs.
The Heathwood girls lost only one set. Orangeburg’s Mary Brooks McDonald at No. 1 singles, won the first set against Heathwood’s Catherine Savoca, 6-4, before losing the second set 6-0, and then falling 10-5 in the tiebreaker.
The Highlanders and coach Nick Gaffos move to an overall 8-6 record and play Wednesday at Ashley Hall in Charleston in the next round of the SCISA playoffs. The Indians finished at 3-12.
Gaffos said, “We were 3- 6 at one point and have won five in a row. As the season has gone along, the girls have seen what it takes to win. All of them have really grown. I have been real proud of all of them. The attitude and energy level is what has really impressed me.” Singles: Catherine Savoca (HH) d.
