Cavalier chosen for USA National Team

Richland Northeast’s Shannon Glover made the USA Baseball 14U National Team. Glover is an eighth grader at Dent Middle School and played JV and varsity for RNE last season. RNE head coach Thane Maness says, “Shannon catches for us and will be counted on to play a big role for RNE baseball this spring.” Following a four-day trial and training evaluation period, USA Baseball has announced the names of the 18 players who will make up the 2011 14U National Team. The club travels to San Felipe, Venezuela, to compete in the COPABE Pan Am ‘A’/14U Championships, August 11-22.

The 14U team competed in two Red vs. Blue intra-squad scrimmages, August 6-7, before it hosted two exhibition games against Charlotte’s Canes 15U team in Cary. August 8-9. The 14U team left for Venezuela August 11 and plays its first game August 12 against Brazil. Pool play will run from August 12-18 with the semifinals and finals August 19 and 21, respectively.

California leads all states in players selected with six, followed by Georgia and Texas with three apiece, Illinois with two, and Pennsylvania, Florida, Oklahoma, and South Carolina each with one.

USA Baseball is the National Governing Body of amateur baseball in the United States and is a member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). The organization selects and trains the World Baseball Classic Team and World Cup Team (and all other USA Baseball Professional Teams); the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team; the USA Baseball 18U, 16U and 14U National Teams; and the USA Baseball Women’s National Team, all of which participate in various international competitions each year.
