Animal Protection League (APL) of SC lost one of its most loyal supporters recently with the death of Elaine Gressette Parker on March 21.

In 1982 she and several other animal lovers founded what has become the Midlands oldest no– kill animal shelter. She worked tirelessly for many years to promote and support APL.

Elaine never met a stranger and was always eager to talk about APL and her other passion– the Gamecocks.

One of her most well–known fundraising efforts was working the USC baseball concessions at Sarge Frye Field to raise money for the APL. Many of those same volunteers can still be found at the third base stand at Carolina Stadium.

Elaine considered herself lucky to be able to combine two things about which she was so passionate.

In the last 29 years many lucky dogs and cats have found loving homes through the Animal Protection League of SC. Elaine helped to recruit many of the volunteers who strive to carry on her work. She can’t be replaced, but we will try to follow in her footsteps. Even when things weren’t going as planned she always said, “We do it for the animals.”
