A letter about the Bard of the Yukon
Thoroughly enjoyed your piece about the Bard of the Yukon. I have clipped it and will keep it on my bookshelf along with my first edition of his The Spell of the Yukon, published in 1907 by Barse & Hopkins of New York.
My copy was bought in Boston by my aunt. It eventually wound up in my hands, for which I am grateful.
I don’t think much of the loosely jointed prose that passes today as “poetry.” In my view, old masters like Service had the skill to pack words on a page in perfect rhythm and rhyme. True poetry, not “poetic prose.”
