One bite and one curl at a time

Jamie Scott is working to change the way Columbia eats and exercises, one bite and one arm curl at a time. And based on the glowing reviews from his boot camp participants, it’s working. “ I have taken every boot camp he’s ever offered,” said Rebecca Howser. “I get real tired of doing the same thing all of the time, and Jamie’s boot camps put me on the right track.”

Scott’s sessions are different from what one thinks of when envisioning “ boot camp.” There’s no yelling, no bullhorns, and no “drop and give me 10,” at Jamie Scott Fitness, located at 3718 Rosewood Drive. But there’s also no whining tolerated.

“Jamie is just so good at motivating people and pushing them to their limits,” said Dr. David Holladay, who has participated in several of Scott’s camps, which typically include about 20–30 people. “The boot camps are fun, but they also make you want to work hard.”

My son, Justin, came home and said ‘Dad, what have you done to yourself?’”

Holladay’s son encouraged him to recall the lessons that Scott had been preaching during his high school years. “I was really impressed that he had influenced my children so much that they were now influencing me,” Holladay said.

The OB/GYN got back on the fitness wagon, thanks to Scott’s boot camps and regular workouts. Scott also inspired Holladay’s wife, Kitty, to become a certified nutritionist, and she is now a regular contributor to the Scott’s blog (jamiescottfitness.com), offering healthy recipes and cooking tips.

The blog offers a different take each day. On Monday, there’s a fitness video. Tuesday features a healthy recipe, and Wednesday is “wild–card” day, supplying rotating information about exercising while traveling or the benefits of stretching.

On Thursday, Scott offers advice about making good choices at local restaurants or healthy places to groceryshop, and on Friday, he opens up the venue to local doctors who write about fitness and nutrition as it relates to their professions.

Holladay, for his part, said his reawakening about fitness has spilled over to his profession. “I realize that I am spending at least 10 to 15 percent of my time talking about fitness and nutrition to my patients,” he said. “I realize that I need to be aware of my own health so I can pass on this knowledge.”

Howser said her own health challenges also helped her to realize the benefits of staying fit. “About nine months ago, I had some health problems, and the summer boot camp got me back into my routine,” she said. “Jamie is a nice guy, but at the same time he pushes you.”

Scott, a former USC football player who also holds a master’s degree in education from South Carolina State, said he believes that “bigger is not better” when it comes to getting into and staying in shape. “I think that you can use light weights and your body weight to achieve the results you want,” he said. “It’s not about using heavy weights, and it’s not about competition.”

Along with his regular boot camps, Scott leads a variety of classes at the gym, and also advises corporate clients through his Boardroom Health Solutions business. He’s busy, but he embraces it. “I just love being around people and helping them reach their goals,” Scott said. “It’s the best part about my job.”
