Town Theatre brings back the good ol’ days of the 1950s

“Students of Springfield High School, this is Principal Varney. Welcome to your 1958 Super Senior Prom! We have some terrific entertainment for you. So hang onto your corsages, and welcome to the stage your very own Marvelous Wonderettes!”

Meet Missy Miller, played by Lou Warth (seen in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), who is not only the head of the prom decorations committee, but she also made most of the refreshments for tonight’s prom. Cindy Lou Huffington, portrayed by Shannon Willis Scruggs (seen in Always… Patsy Cline, Annie Get Your Gun), loves dancing, cheering, singing, drive–in movies and boys (in that order). Betty Jean Reynolds, played by Abigail Smith (seen in White Christmas, Guys & Dolls), is the most athletic of the Wonderettes. She is on the Chipmunk Bowling Squad, Varsity Lady Golfers and is, of course, a cheerleader. Suzy Simpson, portrayed by Sarah Bennett (seen in Steel Magnolias) is proud to be going steady with Richie—three years now! She helped Missy put together all of the decorations and banners for tonight’s prom.

Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy have hopes and dreams

that come alive as they deliver the iconic songs: “Mr. Sandman,” “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Sincerely,” “With this Ring,” “It’s My Party,” “Leader of the Pack,” and many more. The girls will sing their way into your hearts, and it will be a prom to remember.

And you don’t have to come dressed for the prom (although you’re welcome to if you’d like), but you and your “date” can have your photo made as though you had. Town Theatre is providing the backdrop— complete with dress and tuxedo. You provide your faces! Just smile, say “Wonderettes,” and we’ll snap your picture and send it to you. Have a wonderful memento for just a $5 donation with proceeds given to Sistercare. Plus, we’ll enter your name in a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to California Dreaming. Don’t miss the fun at Town Theatre March 4–19. Tickets are $12–20 and may be purchased by calling the Box Office at 803-799-2510.

This charming and funny musical is directed by Allison McNeely with choreography by Shannon Willis Scruggs. The costumer is Donna Harvey with scenic and lighting design by Danny Harrington.

Town Theatre’s 92nd Season is presented by BB&T of South Carolina and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. The Marvelous Wonderettes is sponsored by Lexington Medical Center.
