Harris steps in for record breaker at Airport
In 2009, the Airport Eagles had three–year starter W.T. Murden at quarterback. Murden led the most prolific offense in school history on the way to a perfect regular season.
In 2010, junior Kelvin Harris steps in to fill the big shoes left by Murden. Over the off–season, Harris spent time in the weight room and worked with his future targets at wide receiver in hopes of producing the chemistry he’ll need to be successful. Summer practices also helped Harris get accustomed to his offensive line and his receivers.
Football has been a part of Harris since he began playing in second grade. He is no stranger to success as a quarterback leading the junior varsity squad to an undefeated season on Thursdays in 2009, while standing on the sidelines learning from Murden as the third string quarterback on Fridays.
He credits his father with being his inspiration to play football. As for being the first quarterback to start since Murden’s departure, Harris says he feels no pressure thanks in part to head coach Kirk Burnett’s confidence in him.
“Coach made me feel that I am good enough to start.”
Harris doesn’t have any expectations to repeat what Murden was able to accomplish last year. He just wants to have fun, play well, and win.
Burnett says Harris has played very well during Airport’s two jamborees so far this season.
Harris also rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns of 27, 7, and 25 yards in Aiport’s opener against rival Brookland– Cayce in a lopsided 33–0 victory.
