Long–time surgeon, USC fan celebrates 93rd birthday

Friends, family, and representatives of the University of South Carolina gathered at Mayberry’s on Platt Springs Road in West Columbia on Friday, August 27 to celebrate Dr. Charles Crews’s 93rd birthday. USC Football Coach Steve Spurrier, Baseball Coach Ray Tanner, and Basketball Darren Horn were among the coaches from the university honoring Dr. Crews.
USC Athletic Director Eric Hyman gave Dr. Crews a picture of Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska, the sight of South Carolina’s National Championship victory over UCLA in June. The picture was signed by all the baseball players and coaches.
Dr. Crews came to Columbia from Oxford, North Carolina to attend the University of South Carolina. After graduating from the University in 1943, Dr. Crews enrolled at the Medical College of South Carolina to continue his studies in medicine. After graduation he practiced general surgery in Columbia for 50 years. Along with his work as a surgeon, Dr. Crews helped start the nursing program at Midlands Technical College. In 2006 Lexington Medical Center honored Dr. Crews by naming a new suite of operating rooms after him. He is a lifelong Gamecock Club member and the Dr. Charles Crew Football Facility at Williams-Brice Stadium is also named after Dr. Crews.
