Jeeps rev up patriotism
2010-09-03 / News
Among the vintage vehicles transporting visiting veterans of WWII’s Battle of the Bulge from the Marriott Hotel reunion headquarters to Williams Brice Stadium and the surrounding Gamecock Country, six are restored jeeps. Volunteer members of Military Vehicle Collectors of South Carolina have invested hundreds of man hours to return these jeeps from various American wars back to their original service conditions. Bringing to the effort their individual mechanical and other restorations skills, volunteers for years have worked at their patriotic hobby one night a week. The group’s motivation is to have vehicles available for parades and public events, knowing that driving them, even parking them, sparks patriotic sentiment and elicits questions that fuel education about the nation’s military history. The same jeeps will return in early November to Charleston in support of Veterans’ Day observances. MVCSC, a 501c3, was part of the port city’s observances in 2009 including a weekend presence on the USS Yorktown where this picture was taken.www.mvcollectorssc.org.
