Town Theatre kicks off 92nd season with Gypsy—a Musical
Gypsy comes to Town Theatre September 10 – October 2, Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinee at 3 p.m.
Gypsy is the musical fable of a stage mother whose quiet, obedient little girl, Louise, grows up to become world–famous burlesque stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. Last presented by Town Theatre in 1989, the show chronicles the life of Mama Rose, the ultimate show–biz mama, as she drags her small–fry troupe on a musical tour that takes them through sordid back stages and fleabag hotels of the 1920s.
“Ready or not – here comes Mama” with Catherine
Bailey (The Li ttle
Shop of Horrors) taking the role of the always domineering and sometimes demeaning, Mama Rose. “Curtain up—light the lights” as Giulia Dalbec
Mathews ( Damn Yankees)
portrays the unnoticed Louise who becomes a star as Gypsy. “Let us entertain you” with Dainty June, played by Elisabeth Smith (Annie 2010 and 1997) and
Haley Sprankle (Annie
2010, who first adores the spotlight, but then despises it; creating the opening for her sister’s rise to stardom. It’s “Together, Wherever We Go” with Rob
Sprankle (The King and I)
in the role of Herbie, who finds himself struggling between being a father figure to Louise and June and a suitor to Mama Rose. But, in the end, you’ll agree that “everything’s coming up roses” with this musical classic.
Gypsy is sponsored by Colonial Life: the director is Jamie Carr Harrington; musical director, Laura Adair; choreographer, Tracy Steele; costumer, Lori Stepp; scenic and lighting designer is Danny Harrington.
Tickets are $18 for adults; $15 for senior 65+/active military/college; and $12 for youth (17 and under).
The annual opening night party will be held Friday, September 10. Everyone who attends the first performance of Gypsy is invited to join the cast and crew immediately after the show for complimentary champagne, sweet iced tea, and lots of good food. Town Theatre’s neighbor, NBSC, has graciously offered the parking lot for the festivities. The Board of Governors of Town Theatre, will be there to greet everyone.
