The Hammond Skyhawks are the four–time defending state champion. The Cardinal Newman Cardinals are coming off a one–win season, but both schools made football look easy in the Highlander Jamboree at Heathwood Hall Friday, August 20.
In the first half, Cardinal Newman took on Richard Winn. The Cardinals showed off a powerful running game rushing for 218 yards in the 24–0 whitewashing.
The Cardinals got on the board first on a 19–yard run from Nick Palevich. When they got the ball back, the Cardinals needed only four plays to score again. A 36–yard touchdown run by Connor Desmond gave Cardinal Newman a 16–0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second frame, Cole Bacon scored from 36 yards out to cap the scoring. The Cardinal defense held Richard Winn to two first downs and did not allow the Eagles to cross midfield until the end of the half.
