Quirky Crimes in the Capital City
tGreenleaf Road, 3000 block: Police were called to a home at 5:30 a.m. Thursday after a woman barged into a home she had previously been trespassed from and refused to leave. Someone heard loud arguing from the home and phoned police when they recognized the woman’s voice. Once officers arrived, they found the 36–year–old woman sitting in the middle of the floor eating soup. She refused to leave the home and told them if they tried to take her they would have to kill her because she had done nothing wrong and would defend herself. They tried to reason with the woman, but she stood and pulled a 10–inch kitchen knife out and held it with both hands while pointing it at her chest. She threatened to stab herself, so she was tased twice until they could subdue her and handcuff her. After a struggle resulting in one more tasing she was taken to the hospital for mental evaluation and treatment. After she is evaluated, she will be sent to another facility.
tForest Drive, 4000 block: A man was arrested at 4 p.m. Tuesday after he was caught stealing $142 worth of baby formula and sausage from a grocery store. The 22–year–old man spoke only broken English and had no valid identification on him at the time of the arrest. He was with another man and spotted by a clerk in the store. The duo stuffed the meat and formula into their clothing and then went to the register to pay for three items. When a manager asked them about the lumps in their clothing, one of the men fled the store, but the other was caught. Once police got the formula and the sausage back, the man offered to pay for the goods as he had $176 in cash in his wallet.
tForest Drive, 3400 block: Police were called to a mall at 2 p.m. Monday after a man tried to steal an $18 pair of earrings. While a security guard watched, the man took the earrings out of the box they were in and pocketed them. He then went upstairs and out of the store into the mall and then outside where a patrol car was waiting for him. He at first acted as if he were going to cooperate with police, but then he began to resist arrest. Once they got him under control they also found another $80 jewelry gift set on him. A computer check revealed the 22–year–old had a long history of shoplifting so he was charged and taken to jail.

tBethel Church Road, 4000 block: A man called police at midnight Sunday after he said his wife wouldn’t let him in his house. When officers arrived, they found the man on the stoop with the door to the house chain locked. The man said the wife wouldn’t open the door, and she had spit on him before the police arrived. Finally, the officers convinced the woman to let the man into the home, but when she did she refused to speak to the officers or the man and locked herself in her bedroom.
West Columbia
tDenham Avenue, 400 block: Police were called to a church at 9 a.m. Wednesday after a staff member was notified by their bank that a $100 bill was counterfeit. The staff member said she turned in the money and thought all was well until the bank alerted her that the bill was a fake. It had apparently been put in the offering plate Sunday.
tWade Street, 100 block: A woman called police at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday after she said her ex–boyfriend and his mother were harassing her. The woman said she and the man had been together for 15 years but broke up about four months ago. She said that since the break–up the man constantly texts her, calls her, and is now harassing her through her Facebook page. Now she said the man’s mother has begun to harass her as well. She said that while she was with the man, he was charged with two counts of domestic violence, and now she just wants to end the relationship and have the mother and son both leave her alone.
tAugusta Road, 2400 block: Two men were arrested at 3 a.m. Tuesday after an officer saw them trying to drive drunk. The officer spotted the duo leaving a bar around 2 a.m., and they were unsteady on their feet and stumbling in the parking lot. The officer approached them and asked if they had been drinking. They admitted they had had “a lot to drink” so he advised them to call someone for a ride. They said they would so the officer left. The officer then circled around and saw the same two men approaching their car and trying to get it open with the key. They were so drunk they couldn’t fit the key in the lock so they were charged with public drunkenness and taken to jail.
tAugusta Road, 2400 block: A man was arrested at 1 a.m. after he was pulled over by police, and they found him covered in blood. The man told officers he had been beaten up at a bar. Officers called paramedics and tried to get the man to tell them what happened, but he was too drunk. When they contacted the bouncer at the bar he told them that the man was fine; he went to the restroom and was in there about 20 minutes. The bouncer said he then went in to check on him and found him covered in blood and trying to wash his face. He said the man was extremely intoxicated but said he would sleep it off in his car. The bouncer wasn’t sure when the man decided to drive. Police took him to the hospital for medical care and then to jail.
