The Hard–Luck Doc

Dr. Kyle Hewett, a great cardiologist and true South Carolina sportsman, originally from Orangeburg, now calls Columbia his home. This man has participated in some of the biggest hunting– and–fishing–trips–gone–wrong known to man.

Kyle’s unusual experiences were definitely not caused by a lack of brains. Rather, he just happened always to be the result of a perfect storm of events—some a combination of bad luck, others sleeplessness, the weather, non–functioning equipment, and other people.

One of his most ridiculous adventures resulted from the combination of an icy boat ramp, a boat backing friend, and a broken gas pedal that led to Ryan Hewett’s (Kyle’s brother) SUV being lost into Sparkleberry swamp early one morning.

It was during the fall of 1998 that Kyle and a friend from medical school left early one morning to hunt Sparkleberry Swamp near Santee. Kyle’s Honda Accord did not have a trailer hitch, so he borrowed his brother Ryan’s SUV to pull the jonboat. Arriving at the boat ramp a little after 4 a.m., Kyle climbed into the boat, and Kyle’s friend got behind the wheel of the SUV to back the boat down. The boat backed down all right. As this fish tale goes, the gas pedal got stuck on the floor of the SUV, causing boat and trailer to splash hard into Santee. Kyle’s friend jumped out of the window of the SUV as Kyle floated in disbelief.

A tow truck pulled the SUV out on its side later that morning. At the time, Kyle’s brother Ryan was home from college for winter break. When Kyle and Ryan’s father called Ryan to tell him that they needed to talk to him about the SUV, Ryan hung up the phone thinking he was in trouble for the six–pack of beer he had hidden in the back of the car.

Dr. Hewett stories are endless.Anyone looking for a heart doc, Kyle is one of the best around. Just don’t go hunting or fishing with him unless you have a day to give and an adventure to live.
