Contributed by Richland County Recreation Commission and City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department

For 23 years, the Richland County Recreation Commission and the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department have hosted the Midlands Area Senior Games. Once again, this year’s event promises to be fun–filled and competitive. From September 20–23, senior athletes from the Midlands will gather together to compete in Olympic–style events.

Men and women athletes ages 50 and older may register by September 1 and pay a $13 fee; there is a $2 late fee after that date. Golf and bowling require additional fees. No registrations will be taken the day of an event. The registration fee includes a T–shirt and closing awards luncheon Thursday, September 23 at the Capital Senior Center, 1650 Park Circle. All participants are encouraged to consult a physician before competing.

Athletes will compete in Olympic–style sports competitions at several locations including the kick–off golf tournament at LinRick Golf Course, 356 Campground Road. Other featured events during the week include bowling at Royal Z Lanes on Two Notch Road on Tuesday, track and field events at Meadowlake Park, and swimming at Drew Wellness Center on Harden Street on Wednesday. Other locations will host tennis, ping pong, bingo, and Frisbee golf. Winners may be eligible to compete in the 2011 South Carolina Senior Sports Classic.

Registration forms are available at the Adult Activity Center, 7494 Parklane Road, 462-9995, or www.richlandcountyrecreation.com.
