Color Your World benefits Capital Senior Center

Senior Care Professionals of the Midlands (SCPM) hosted “Color Your World,” a benefit for the Capital Senior Center on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. The well–attended event featured food prepared on site by chefs from Laurel Crest, Atria, and the Rice Home. A silent auction and music provided by pianist Barbara McBride added to the festivities. Proceeds will pay for painting the interior of the center located at Maxcy Gregg Park.
Marsha Clayman, development director for the National Association for Mental Illness in Columbia, led the effort. “The Capital Senior Center is a great resource to the senior community, and when we learned their funding had been reduced, SCPM members wanted to help.”
The Capital Senior Center’s mission is to keep the community’s adults age 50 and older physically fit, socially engaged, intellectually stimulated, and independent. The center is used seven days a week by an average of 150–200 individuals daily engaging in exercise classes, social events, and educational activities. The center is also used as meeting space for a variety of community organizations such as SCPM.
“We are very grateful to the members of SCPM for their support, and we are now moving ahead with the project.” said Mary Kessler, executive director of the Capital Senior Center. She also expressed gratitude to Mayor Steve Benjamin and Councilwoman Belinda Gergel for attending.
