West Columbia city employees host benefit luncheon for two of their own

By Anita Baker

The employees of the City of West Columbia are holding a special fundraiser to benefit two city employees who are currently battling cancer. A special luncheon will be held for the public on Friday July 30, 2010, at the American Legion Hut on 762 B Avenue next to the West Columbia Community Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The lunch will be a plate of chicken tenders with two sides, roll and tea for $6. All proceeds from the event will be given to city employees Fran Botham and Sandy Nieves to help pay for medical bills.

Mardi McKinnon, West Columbia City Clerk, says that the city employees decided to give back to two ladies who have both worked faithfully and given their all for the people of West Columbia. They are both employees who are known to willingly sacrifice their time and efforts to help someone else.

In addition to the meal, city employees are organizing a bake sale and a silent auction including two commemorative 2010 CWS baseballs with “Carolina” on them in cubes ready for display signed by Coach Ray Tanner and a Gamecock hat signed by Ray Tanner with the inscription “2010 World Series Champions.” Bids for the silent auction items will close at 2 p.m. on July 30.
