It’s about time
The city of Forest Acres’ long awaited clock project has now reached a satisfying conclusion.
Located in front of the First Citizen’s Bank at the corner of Forest Drive and Trenholm Road, the area contains landscaping, a brick flower bed, and, of course, an operating clock.
City officials had been working through various easements and red–tape issues for months before the project was finally given the green light in June.
The clock, which was purchased from Verdin Clock Company for about $26,000, had been in storage for months awaiting the green light for installation.
In May, after all the “i’s” were dotted and the “t’s” crossed, the council awarded Tyler Construction the job, with a low bid of $45,308. Land clearing started in late June, and the project was completed the first week of July.
According to Forest Acres County Manager Mark Williams, the clock contains an inner global positioning system device that will allow it to keep correct time, even in the case of a power outage.
“I am very pleased to see that it keeps correct time,” he said. “Resetting a clock is time-consuming. People don’t like it when it’s wrong.”
Williams said the community reaction has been very positive.
“If you stand out there, people will go by and honk and wave,” Williams said. “They roll down their window and say, ‘We love the clock.’”
Speaking of keeping time, at May’s regularly scheduled city council meeting, councilor Charles Fetner announced that he wanted to see the project wrapped up by his birthday on July 28.
His wish was granted.
