Julia Rogers Hook's Quirky Crimes in the Capitol city

West Columbia

tB Avenue, 1100 block: Police were called to a recording studio at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday after a man said two men robbed him at gunpoint. The alleged 23–year-old victim told officers he was working at the studio and went out to smoke a cigarette. He said as he did, two men, one with a shotgun and one with a handgun, pointed the weapons at him and demanded he come outside. He did so and offered them his wallet that one of them took. Just then, a car alarm sounded, and the victim said that spooked the robbers and diverted their attention long enough for him to go back inside and bolt the door. He called police, and officers found the car with the man with the handgun driving and the other one running toward the vehicle with his shotgun. The police car had the robbers blocked, and the armed driver rammed the police car several times in an escape attempt before backup arrived, and the gunmen were arrested. Damage to the patrol car is estimated at $1,000.

tCharleston Highway, 1200 block: Five people were arrested in a drug bust at 11 a.m. Tuesday after the group repeatedly walked individually into a store to buy boxes of Sudafed. Store employees suspected that some of them were shoplifting the medicine and called police. Officers recognized one of the men from previous drug arrests and asked him what he was doing. He said he had a dead battery and was trying to get a jump. They asked him if he had any illegal drugs or weapons, and he told them he wasn’t sure so they searched him. During the search a tin of what appeared to be methamphetamine, a form of illegal speed was found. Officers asked the man what it was and he said, “You tell me.” After identifying the drug, two people were arrested and then when the officers searched the car, they found almost 200 pills, pill crushers, and all of the materials commonly used to process the methamphetamine into ‘crank, a street drug. There were also numerous shoplifted items including batteries, pliers and boxes of condoms.

tForest Drive, 3400 block: A woman went to police headquarters at 9:30 p.m. Sunday to report that her baby–daddy had assaulted her. The 24–year–old woman told officers she and her live–in boyfriend, whom she said had fathered one of her children, had been grocery shopping and were on the way home with the kids when the man started accusing her of having an affair. She said the 25–year-old man then became violent and smashed a bag of potato chips. As his rage escalated, she said he then threw all of the groceries out of the car and then pulled over and told her and the children to get out. When she hesitated, she said he grabbed her arm and left scratch marks. She told police this was not the first incident of violence with the man.

tPercival Road, 3000 block: A mother called police at 2 p.m. Sunday after she said her son attacked the mother of his child in her home. The mother told officers that the couple was at her home in the kitchen when the 16–year–old girlfriend came running into the living room being chased by the son. The mother said the 18–year–old son knocked his girlfriend to the ground and began to beat on her. The mother said at that point she jumped on her son to try and pull him off but had an asthma attack and had to stop. The girlfriend ran to the man’s grandmother’s apartment to call police, but the boyfriend kicked in the door, knocking the grandmother to the floor. The man’s mother called police, and the man fled with the girlfriend running after him. Once police arrived, neither the mother nor the grandmother wanted to press charges, but because the baby–mama was only 16, the man will face criminal domestic charges.

tHutto Court, 30th block: A woman called police to her home at 1 p.m. Sunday after she said her boyfriend planted marijuana in her car to get her in trouble. The 26–year–old woman told officers she found a bag of pot in the console of her car, and she believed her boyfriend put it there to get her in trouble with the law. Officers confiscated the drug and no charges were filed.

tPinestraw Road, 5400 block: Police were called to a home at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after two sisters got into a fight over one of the sister’s wardrobe. When officers arrived, one woman told them her sister had taken a shower and was parading around the living room in front of the entire family in just a towel. She said she asked the sister to put some clothes on and the sister got angry and became belligerent. She said at that point the sister picked up an angel figurine and tried to hit her with it but missed. The mother then broke up the fight and separated the women. Another person on the scene agreed to take the woman in the towel back to her own house if she would get dressed. No charges were pressed and no injuries were reported.
