Beware! Big Brother is watching you

On Tuesday, June 22nd the City of Columbia, in a continuing effort to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Columbia conducted a Quality of Life Sweep in various neighborhoods throughout the City. The sweep was conducted by multiple departments/divisions of the City of Columbia which started at 8 a.m. and continued into the afternoon.

A collaborative effort by Columbia Police, Columbia Fire, Planning and Development Services, and Public Works departments began the sweep on Tuesday morning and continued into the late afternoon hours. Staff and resources from each of the departments were used to conduct preliminary evaluations and observations during the sweep.

Columbia Fire, Fire Prevention conducted fire code inspections. Planning and Development Services, Zoning division conducted inspections and addressed front yard parking. Housing and Code Enforcement enforced property maintenance codes. Public Works, Animal Services division conducted animal license checks and provided support during the sweep. Solid Waste division conducted collections of debris/trash and provided support as needed. Business License initiated business license violations and summonses. Columbia Police provided support to all personnel during the sweep.

As a result of the sweep the following actions were taken: Housing Inspectors initiated 46 structural incidents. Code Enforcement Inspectors initiated 121 property code violations. Fire Inspectors initiated 25 fire code violations and 9 summonses. Business License Inspectors initiated 29 business license violations and issued 12 summonses.

Animal Control Officers (ACO) seized two animals and issued six notices of violation.

The City of Columbia will continue to conduct these sweeps throughout the city to provide a better quality of life to its citizens.
