For the third time in four games, West Columbia Post 79 is on the wrong end of the score dropping a 13–11 decision to Chapin Post 193. The West Columbia offense was able to stay hot knocking in 11 runs on 16 hits. Among those 11 runs were two three–run home runs. The first was by Stuart Pound, who coach Legree Oswald says is a very important part to his team.

“Stuart is a catalyst on this team; he always works hard. He gives it 200 percent. He caught one and drove it,” Oswald said.

The second home run was by pitcher Todd Joyner who, along with his hot bat, had a solid day on the mound pitching four innings and striking out four batters.

“Todd worked hard today and gave it 100 percent and pitched his heart out on the mound,” Oswald said.

However, it was the defense that let Post 79 down creating numerous errors including one in the top of the fourth when a routine fly was mishandled allowing Stephen Dowling for Irmo–Chapin to reach base. The mistake started a rally that allowed Post 193 to tie the game at 5–5. Again in the fifth, an early error allowed Irmo–Chapin to break the tie. With Chris Watford on third and Stephen Dowling on second, a rash of singles starting with Jacob Hutchinson allowed Post 193 to take a commanding lead. The last run was scored when Cole Lee hit a single scoring Michael Huff from third giving Post 193 a 9–5 lead.

Post 193 added to its lead in the top of the sixth when a single by Will Keel brought in Dowling. Later in the inning, both Addison Hinshaw and Keel scored on wild pitches making the score 12–5.

In the bottom of the sixth, Joyner brought Post 79 back with a three–run home run to make the score 12–8. Later in the inning, Josh Sealey scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 12–9.

However, it was not enough for Post 79 as Lee shut down the West Columbia hitting in both the 8th and 9th inning getting six straight outs to preserve the 13–11 win for Irmo–Chapin Post 193.

Despite the loss, Oswald was proud of his team’s fight.

“It was a tough fought game all the way. We got down early; our kids fought back. I’m real proud of our kids fighting back. They just never gave up.”
