Water main break leads to sink hole

Photo and story by Josh Cruse

Sink hole on Cherry Street Sink hole on Cherry Street Motorists who travel on Cherry Street toward King Street had anything but a normal commute on Monday morning, June 14. A water main break caused a sink hole at the corner of Cherry and King Street.

According to James Johnson, supervisor of water main for Columbia, a busted fitting is to blame for the sink hole. Workers responded quickly to the incident, excavating the line and completing the routine repair the same day.

Johnson says this is an isolated incident and not related to the water main problems that Columbia faced on Huger Street two years ago.

While the water line is repaired, it will be later in the week before the street is completely repaired.
