Going into the top of the fifth inning, Richland Post 6 held a 2–1 lead. Both teams had combined for three runs and five hits. However, as West Columbia Post 79 came to bat in the top half of that inning, things began to change. Over the next five innings, the teams combined for 23 runs and 20 hits as Post 79 outlasted Post 6 for a 15–11 win on Sunday, June 6.

West Columbia pitcher Todd Joyner picked up the win, going 6–2/3 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out seven batters. Richland pitcher Marshall Baker pitched 4–2/3 innings allowing two runs on five hits and striking out three.

As Matt Tanner stepped to the plate for Post 79 to begin the top of the fifth, it felt like Post 6 had the momentum. Baker was able to get his team out of a few jams in the earlier innings despite West Columbia’s ability to get on base. Tanner started the inning by flying out, adding to Post 6’s momentum. But two walks and a single given up to the next three batters gave West Columbia the bases loaded for Stuart Pound. A run– scoring groundout by Pound tied the game at 2–2. Jordan Williams followed up with an RBI double giving West Columbia a 4–2 lead.

Post 79 added to its lead in the top of the sixth. Luke Beasley led off with a single. Tanner brought him in with a one–out triple extending the lead to 5–2. A double by Joyner scored Tanner from third to make the score 6–2. Corey Holmes kept the momentum going by hitting a double of his own allowing Joyner to come home and giving West Columbia a 7–2 lead.

Richland Post 6 picked up a run in the bottom half of the sixth to shrink the deficit to four going into the seventh. However, West Columbia’s hot bats re-mained hot. Post 79 was able to bring in two more runs in the seventh and four more in the top half of the eighth, to hold a 13–4 edge over Post 6.

That was when the bats for Post 6 came alive. A bases loaded walk to Kevin Davis scored Chandler Knox to shrink the deficit to 13–5 while keeping the bases loaded. Despite a change in pitchers, West Columbia walked the next two batters making the score 13–7. Alexander Shaw followed up the walks with a single shrinking the deficit to 13–8. Later in the inning, a single from Knox allowed Ryan Mercer to close the gap to 13–9.

West Columbia was able to get two runs back, thanks in part to an RBI double from Holmes and an RBI fly–out to give Post 79 a 15–9 lead.

However, after a lead– off strike out by Miles Fisher, the next five batters for Post 6 hit singles scoring two runs during that stretch to make the score 15–11. But that was all the runs Post 6 was able to muster.
