Congaree Rapid SKY92 team going west for possible national title
The Rapid SKY92 will represent South Carolina in the Region III Classic Cup in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma June 11–12, 2010.
A U17 boys’ soccer team representing the Congaree Rapid Soccer Association will travel this week to Tulsa, Okla., hoping to win enough games in the regional competition to take them onto July’s national showdown. The winner will represent Region III at the national event July 8–12 in Murfreesboro , Tenn.
The 18 players, mostly juniors and seniors, have been playing together for five years, according to coach Marcus Hunter.
The Rapid SKY92 team is made up of eight Brookland–Cayce students, three from Dreher, two from Heathwood Hall, two from Cardinal Newman, two from Ridge View and one from A.C. Flora.
The team went 4–0 during the President’s Cup competition and won the state championship in November scoring 21 goals while only giving up three, said Hunter, which qualified them for the trip to Tulsa.
“We are representing South Carolina in Tulsa, and will be playing teams from Tennessee, Florida, North Carolina, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas,” Hunter said. “There are 12 other teams, and the winner will go to the national championships in Tennessee.”
All teams in the Region III competition will begin with pool play. The SKY92 team will face the Louisiana’s Sidell Hurricanes on June 11 at 12:30, followed the next day with an 8 a.m. matchup with the Texas Rush, and then conclude later on June 12 with a game against Arkansas’ Maumelle Maniacs.
Based on their performance in round–robin play, the teams will be seeded and move on to quarterfinal, semifinal, and championship games, according to the U.S. Youth Soccer website for the Region III championships.
Team members of the CRSA SKY92 include Brookland– Cayce’s Herbert Cojulun, Ryan Bristow, Juan Flores, Joshua Boatwright, Christian Nordenstam, Jalin Butler, Corey Day, and Richie Linton; Dreher’s Gunnar Burts, Leif Kays, and Elliott Harrington; Heathwood Hall’s Alex Williams and Will Norris; Ridge View’s Kenneth Jones and Parker Lucas; Cardinal Newman’s Jono Cleary and Michael Hodaly; A.C.
