The month of May has been designated as Smart Teens Drive Safe Month. The purpose of the campaign is to reduce the high fatality rate of teen drivers throughout the country. The campaign provides novice teen drivers with safety notification signs for their vehicles in an effort to alert other motorists and deter road and highway fatalities and enable teen drivers to learn in a safer and better controlled environment.

This safety campaign effort began with three dedicated young women: Tiffanie, Twana, and Victoria Williams. The Williams sisters are the creators of Drive Safe as well as the non–profit Smart Teens Drive Safe Foundation. Congressman James E. Clyburn and the Columbia City Council presented a proclamation to the Williams sisters in recognition of Smart Teens Drive Safe Month.

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death and injury for teen drivers and young adults from ages 16 through 25. Each year according to the National Transportation Safety Institute, an average of 16 teenagers a day, die in motor vehicle crashes.

Throughout the month of May and the entire year, all citizens are encouraged to help reduce injuries and the tragic loss of life on our roads and highways by supporting this critical campaign. For more information, visit www.drivesafesigns.com.
