Carol J. Pardun, director of and professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and associate dean of the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies at the University of South Carolina, has been presented with 2010 Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award from the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Colonel C.E. Burke, a native of Hopkins and Eau Claire High School graduate, has been named inter- im City of Columbia police chief. He served in the Air Force before enlisting in the Columbia Police Department in 1979. He has risen throughout his career with the City of Columbia from a beat officer, on up through the ranks. He was promoted to corporal in 1981, sergeant in 1984, lieutenant in 1986, captain in 1991, Major in 2005, and colonel in 2007. Burke is a graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy; the School of Justice Administration, Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Louisville; Southern Police Institute, V.I.P. Intelligence, at Glynco, Georgia; the F.B.I. National Academy at Quantico, Va.; and the Tactical Training Center at Fort Jackson. He also has participated in additional law enforcement training and educational programs. Historic Columbia Foundation has recognized the commendable efforts of Columbia’s citizens, architects, developers, and others whose preservation projects provide the distinctive character of Columbia’s cultural landscape. Petty Officer Second Class Angelo Moore, a volunteer Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia, has been named South Carolina’s Big of the Year.

Providence Hospitals has inducted Dr. James Roland Clark, Dr. Hal H. Crosswell Jr., and Dr. Alden Sweatman into the Society of St. Luke, a program that celebrates and honors selected members of the Providence medical staff.
