Quirky Crimes in The Capital City
West Columbia
tAugusta Road, 2400 block: Police were called to a discount department store at 9 a.m. Thursday after a woman said a man she knew was distraught after their breakup. The woman told officers that she and the man had a verbal disagreement, and she left the scene telling the man she wanted to break up with him. A short time later the man called the woman and told her she should look for his body behind Wal Mart. He apparently enjoyed shopping there and said that if she wouldn’t date him then he would leave his earthly remains there. Police found the man lurking in the bushes and took him to a hospital for a mental evaluation.
tSunset Blvd., 300 block: A man called police at 5 p.m. Tuesday after he said an angry female employee was threatening to hurt him. The 39–year–old man told officers that he had to terminate the 27–year–old woman’s employment and when he did she got extremely angry. The man said the woman began to swear at him and threatened to beat him up. She kept insisting that he come outside so she could “kick his ass,” but the man declined the offer and called police. She stood outside the door threatening to kick it in until police arrived at which point she left the premises without further incident.
t17th Street, 200 block: Police were called to a home at 8 p.m. Wednesday after a man said his son was drunk and threatening to beat him up. The father told officers the son drank often and always became violent. They went into the bedroom to talk to him and found him sitting sideways on the bed holding on to it as if he were sliding off. He reeked of alcohol, and his speech was badly slurred. He admitted that he had had “a few” drinks and that he had pushed his father, but “it wasn’t that hard.” He began to yell, swear at, and threaten the officers so he was charged with drunkenness and assault and taken to jail.
tManning Drive, 100 block: A man called police at 10 p.m. Tuesday after he said another man tried to run him over at a softball game. The 45–year–old man said that while he was at the game to watch his daughter, he and another man got into an argument over a call on a play. The other man, 47, then began to yell at him and call him names and so he said he yelled back and told the other man to leave the game. He followed the man to his car, and the argument continued. When he again told the man to leave the game, the man abruptly backed up and hit the first man in the arm with his side mirror. No charges were filed.
Richland Sheriff
tBriargate Circle: Police were called to a post office at 3 p.m. Wednesday after an employee reported being robbed at knife point. The employee told officers that she had just stepped back from the counter to drop some mail when a person in dark clothes and a Halloween mask jumped over the counter, grabbed her arm, pulled a 12–15–inch butcher knife on her and demanded she open the cash register and give him the money. The woman said that at first she thought it was a joke, but when she laughed the robber squeezed her arm really hard and shoved her toward the register. He grabbed all of the money and then jumped over the counter and ran out the door. A male employee chased him but lost him in a subdivision near the post office. The female postal clerk endured bruises and soreness where the man grabbed her. It was not known how much money the robber got.
tBroad River Road, 1500 block: A confused boss called police at 6 p.m. Wednesday after he realized that someone had cashed three bogus payroll checks from his company. The man told police that when he realized there was a discrepancy in his bank balance he talked to the bank, and they figured out what had happened. The checks looked authentic, and there was a very believable fake signature authorizing them. The man said he didn’t know how this could have happened because all three checks were cashed at the same check cashing place, and he doesn’t ever use that one. The addresses on the recipients of the checks were all in Rock Hill and invalid.
Forest Acres
tPercival Road, 300 block: A woman called police at 8 p.m. Wednesday after she said a band of juveniles vandalized her car and threatened her with bodily harm. The 19–year–old woman told officers that her sister had recently moved out of the apartment they shared because they both believed that the sister’s 16–year–old exboyfriend was stealing from the apartment. When the sister moved out, the boyfriend thought the other woman had kicked her out so on Wednesday he called her and threatened to come over and “shoot the place up.” He also threatened to hurt her. He came to the door, and the woman shut it in his face but a short time later he banged on the door and demanded she come out. When she did, she saw that her car had a broken windshield and was dented along both sides and every dent had a boot print on it. The ex–boyfriend denied having anything to do with it, but a neighbor saw the man along with a band of his buddies around the car vandalizing it. The group could face charges.
