West Columbia addresses public transportation
The regularly scheduled meeting of the West Columbia City Council was held on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at 6 p.m. Council members present were Mayor Bobby Horton, L. Dale Harley, Eric L. Fowler, Jack L. Harmon, Marsha Moore Boyd J. Jones and Tommy G. Parler. Members absent were B.J. Unthank and Cathy Shannon.
After the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance led by council member Boyd J. Jones, the council heard from Rachael Stansfield, state ambassador for the South Carolina 4–H Club, who presented an update of 4–H Programs in Lexington County.
The next two presentations made to the council were by Greg Dahl, mental health clinician with Lexington County Department of Mental Health, and Rose Lopez, chief financial officer of the non–profit organization, Growing Homes Southeast. Both spoke on funding public transportation services in the City of West Columbia.
Both speakers expressed their concern of the possibility of the loss of public transportation services in the city of West Columbia. They spoke of the consequences this would bring to the quality of life for those who cannot afford their own transportation and for the local economy. Mayor Horton responded to their concerns stating that he and the council will continue to serve the needs of the people of West Columbia with regards to public transportation. No decision was made on this issue and further discussion was planned.
The council members then adjourned to executive session to discuss a personnel matter and reconvened briefly to approve appointments to the West Columbia Planning Commission and the West Columbia Zoning Board for three year terms to end May 2013. Harold Prater was reappointed to the West Columbia Planning Commission. New members appointed to the West Columbia Planning Commission were Heyward Wessinger, Larry Miller, and Bill Mooneyhan. Richard Cuppens was reappointed to the West Columbia Zoning Board.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
