Your Voice, Your Paper

Rep. Joe Wilson responds to last week’s opinion piece

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding the “Congressional Reform Act.” I appreciate your taking the time to write.

I understand your concerns and welcome your interest in this matter. Currently, there is legislation in the House of Representatives that addresses term limits. On December 14, 2009, Representative Tom Price (GA–6) introduced H.J.Res.63. Since that time, H.J.Res.63 has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary for further consideration. If enacted into law, this legislation would limit to 18 the number of years a member of Congress may serve.

At a time when Americans incur greater financial challenges each day, it should not be the duty of Congress to receive an automatic pay raise on the taxpayer’s expense. For this reason, I have cosponsored H.R. 156, a bill which will prevent members of Congress from receiving any automatic pay adjustment in 2010. Additionally, I have introduced H.R. 215, the “Congressional Pay Reform Act of 2009.” This bill would require a recorded vote on any bill, resolution, or amendment that would increase a members’ pay. Unfortunately, the majority leadership has so far refused to allow consideration of this legislation.

Finally, I understand your support for legislation that would require all laws to be applied equally to citizens, senators, and representatives. I believe that if a law is deemed to be an acceptable option for the American people, then it is good enough for those representatives who vote in favor of it. For this reason, during debate on H.R. 3962, the “Affordable Health Care for America Act,” I submitted an amendment that would force all members of Congress and all senators to forgo their current benefits and enroll in the newly created government– run public option. Unfortunately, my amendment was defeated in the House Rules Committee on a party line vote.

Please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind should legislation pertaining to these issue come before me on the House floor. It is an honor to represent the people of the Second Congressional District of South Carolina, and I value your input.
