Quirky Crimes in the Capital City
tAlexander Street, 300 block: A man called police to report that he had just been robbed at knife point at 10:30 pm Tuesday. The man told officers he works with a ministry that serves the area homeless men. One of the men called him to ask him for a ride to his aunt’s house, and the man and his wife went to get him. After they picked up the man and his friend, they drove them to a home in the Mill–Hill district. The man instructed the driver to pull around back so he could go and ask his aunt if he could stay. When he came back out to the car, he got in behind the driver and held what appeared to be knife to his throat and demanded money. The robber began to swear at the man and his wife using obscene language and threatening to “cut” them if they didn’t give him their money. The man got out and tried to fight the robber off, but the robber yanked on his pants pocket and ripped it open, gaining access to a $100 bill the man had there. The robber and the other passenger took the money and fled. The man had to go to the hospital to be treated for a back and shoulder injury from the altercation. Officers spotted the robber a few hours later walking down the street. They charged him with assault and armed robbery.
tAugusta Road, 2300 block: Police were called to a shoe store at noon Saturday after two women got into a fight in the parking lot. The store manager said that one of the women asked her to call another store to see if they had a certain shoe in stock. The manager told her she was busy but gave her the number to call herself. At that point the manager said the customer got really angry and began to call her names and used racial slurs. When the woman likened the manager to a “monkey,” another woman in the store got angry and went after the customer who then ran out of the store with her two children in tow. In the parking lot the fleeing woman began using the “n” word, and the other customer caught up with her and slapped her. Both women began yelling and swearing, and a fight ensued. One woman tried to let the air out of the other woman’s tires and that woman was punching her, witnesses said. When police arrived, they found the two rolling around in the parking lot and calling each other names. They charged the woman who slapped the other woman with assault and the other woman with disorderly conduct.

tDecker Blvd., 2700 block: Police were called to a middle school at 3 pm Wednesday after an employee reported being threatened by a parent. The employee said the mother of a student was extremely angry because the student had been given detention and called her and told her that she was coming to the school to “handle” the situation. The employee said she warned the mother that her comments sounded like a threat and could be interpreted as such. She told the woman to think about what she was saying, but the mother told the employee “I know what I am saying and you are going to know what I’m saying” when the mother got to the school. The mother admitted to police that she and the employee had words but she denied threatening her.
tBethel Church Road, 4200 block: A man called police at 6 pm Tuesday after he said his roommate beat him up. The 41–year–old man told officers that the 36–year–old roommate slapped him so he pushed him, and the fight was on. The accused man said he slapped the other man because the man punched him first. He said when they were fighting the other man’s mother tried to hit him in the head with a frying pan, but her aim was bad. The mother said she tried to hit him so he’d stop hitting her son. The accused man told officers he would leave the home for the night until things settled down. His injuries included various cuts and bruises along with a bloody nose.
tDalloz Road, 1600 block: A woman called police at 8:30 pn Monday to report that her stepmother was harassing her. The 43–year–old stepdaughter told officers that her father and her stepmother were estranged and that the father had changed his will, leaving everything to his children from his first marriage. The 54–year–old stepmother is apparently upset about that and calls the stepdaughter to threaten her. Messages include telling the daughter that she is going to report her to DSS and one that said “watch your back, this is war.” The stepdaughter said she is beginning to have concerns for her safety.
tTrenholm Road, 5000 block: A man called police at 5 pm Tuesday to report his wife had stolen almost $10,000 from him while he was in jail. The 42–year–old man said that his 32–year–old wife got his tax refund checks and several insurance checks in the mail and forged his name to deposit them. He said that once the money was in his account the wife knew his pin number and went to various banks to withdraw money until she racked up over $7,000. He said he never authorized the wife or the bank to cash those checks.

tWynn Way, 200 block: A woman called police at 7 pm Monday after she said that a man was threatening her with physical harm. The woman told police that she had filed a report against the man because he called her incessantly with harassing phone calls and when police contacted him regarding that, he got angry and told her he was going to hurt her.
