Rosewood Community Council members discuss Superior Street and bike lanes

By Josh Cruse

Ten years ago a plan was in place to connect Superior Street to Commerce Drive. Unfortunately, the project ran out of funding and was placed on the shelf, where it has remained for the past few years. That was until Dr. Belinda Gergel brought the project back into the spotlight.

Dr. Gergel has taken what Rebecca Munnerlyn, the Rosewood Community Council president, calls the “first steps” to completing the project. Munnerlyn says the city is hoping to get a partnership with the county on this project to find funding to complete Superior Street. Richland County is hoping to pass a one cent sales tax increase in November and, according to Munnerlyn, the city is hoping to use the revenue generated from the tax increase to fund the project.

“It would be a real benefit to the community,” Munnerlyn says.

Munnerlyn emphasizes that this is a project that won’t be completed soon, but the steps taken by Dr. Gergel are important for this project.

On Jim Hamilton Boulevard, bike lanes are complete on both sides of the street. The curbs are painted in yellow, and there are white lines near the edges of the street. Park rangers are on hand to prevent residents from parking in those areas
