Students kick off Columbia Appreciation Day
Columbia Appreciation Day kicks off April 24 from 1–7 pm on the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse. The outdoor festival will be a day of free music and education where everyone is invited to come learn, socialize, and contribute. Columbia Appreciation Day was developed by a USC student, David Sabio, to enrich the community of Columbia and encourage volunteerism.
Attendees will find a wide variety of activities throughout the day. Five local bands will play sharing messages of activism and social awareness. Several speakers will offer inspirational words addressing the elimination of poverty in the Columbia community.
Local non–profit and student organization booths will inform Columbia citizens about volunteer opportunities.
Students and faculty across USC’s campus have helped Sabio plan the event and other activities. Among them is a clothing drive to benefit the Hannah House and the Oliver Gospel Mission. Donation boxes have been placed throughout Columbia and the campus. Those interested in donating may also bring their clothing to the festival.
“I’m totally stoked by all the support the students and faculty have offered to make Columbia Appreciation Day a success,” said festival organizer Sabio.
“This event is focused on supporting and enriching the community of Columbia. We could also use some help from local businesses,” he added.
