Southern Paws and Tails names Columbia’s Beatrice Hordych Animal Rescue Volunteer of the Year

Beatrice Hordych Beatrice Hordych Southern Paws & Tails magazine marks “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month” (April) with the announcement of the winner of South Carolina’s first Animal Rescue Volunteer of the Year contest!

Beatrice Hordych, an 83–year–old resident of Columbia, SC, was presented with a plaque and gift donation for her tireless and tenacious devotion to cats in the Midlands. As a volunteer at the Animal Protection League, she lends herself in every aspect of rescuing cats from fostering and rehabilitating sick cats until they become adoptable to helping with TNR (trap, neuter and release) for cats living in feral colonies.

The contest, opened to all South Carolina residents who are at least 16 years old, was held through February. Dozens of nominations were submitted for consideration for the award.

“This award is our way of recognizing an extraordinary volunteer for her unwavering dedication and effort in rescuing homeless and abused animals while helping animal shelters exist and operate on a daily basis,” says Ramona Chisolm, editor of

Southern Paws & Tails magazine.
