Lady Cardinals fly by A.C. Flora

By George Kaupp

Annalise Hughen went 3–for–4 with two triples and three RBIs and struck out seven as the Cardinal Newman Lady Cardinals defeated the A. C. Flora Lady Falcons 10–2 in varsity softball action Saturday, March 27 at Defender Field.

After allowing an unearned run in the first inning, the Lady Cardinals scored four in the third. Senior Courtney Poston reached on an error, and, after an out and a walk, Hughen tripled to deep left–center, scoring two. Alex August followed with an RBI single and later scored on a Falcon error on a single by Erin Brown.

In the fourth inning, the Cardinals struck again for four runs. Senior Teresa Lattimore singled, and one out later she was driven home by a Lakyn Fowler single. After the second out, Hughen tripled again driving in Fowler, and she scored on a fielding error by the Falcons. August singled again, went to third on a stolen base and wild pitch, and was batted home by Brown for a second time.

The Lady Falcons tried to mount a comeback in the sixth inning when catcher Heather Turner doubled and scored on a two–base error, but Hughen shut down the Falcons after that.

The Cardinals scored their last two runs in the bottom of the sixth on consecutive RBI doubles by August and Brown. Senior Nazley Wilson came on in the seventh to strike out the side for the Cardinals.
