It’s not a criticism; It’s an observation

Identifying the real southern states
By Mike Cox

The Council of State Governments has agreed to allow Maryland to transfer from the Southern region to the Eastern region of their organization. The Crab State lawmakers want to be able to share ideas, philosophy, and strategy with Pennsylvania, New York, and other like minded states.

The council was formed in 1933 by some guy from Colorado. The original intent was to provide a non partisan, non profit group to study specific problems of states and interact with the Federal government.

The CSG is reputed to be the only governmental group that deals with all three branches of the government. I guess they are forgetting about health care lobbyists. I’m also a little skeptical of any group these days claiming to be non partisan or non profit. Neither of those terms seems to apply to political life anymore.

The folks in Maryland can’t seem to make up their minds; they just moved to the Southern region in 1994. The only reason they got in to begin with was the line in their state song, “Maryland, My Maryland,” that mentioned “Northern scum.” The current attitude is that the state’s close proximity to Washington, DC, and sharing of electrical grids with other states now in the Eastern Region, mean they have more in common with those places.

I really don’t see a problem with Maryland’s request since the organization is only correcting the mistake from 1994. They shouldn’t have moved to the Southern Region in the first place. Maryland isn’t a Southern state and never has been. They didn’t join the Confederacy during the Great War, they have no replica of the Stars and Bars on their state flag, and I bet there are no real loony politicians in the state, at least not the hypocritical, weaseling ones like we have in the true heart of the Confederacy.

I don’t have to waste any more ink and paper on the embarrassing exploits of South Carolina’s government representatives. The people who run Alabama are trying to make electronic bingo illegal without actually offering a legal opinion or passing any laws.

Now a senator from Georgia has made the comment that if we succeed in approving health care reform, a person’s insurance card will be as useless as, “a Confederate dollar from the War of Yankee Aggression.” Maybe the folks in Baltimore don’t want to be associated with politicians like that. Who can blame them?

It could be that Maryland is influenced by the organization itself. The headquarters is in Lexington. Kentucky is another state that thinks it is Southern and is mistaken. Their only claim to Dixie is the mint julep.

Maryland and Kentucky are about as southern as banana pudding with blueberries, saying “you all,” instant grits, and taking store bought fried chicken to a church homecoming. Come to think of it, this is a perfect time to reconfirm which state is what.

When I made my first trip into the Real North, I thought someone had made a mistake when I crossed the Mason Dixon Line. The stupid thing is at the Pennsylvania border. I would have sworn it was somewhere around Knoxville; somewhere south of Knoxville.
