Relieve spring fever at Dance, Dance, Dance

For those looking to relieve spring fever, the South Carolina Philharmonic recommends an evening of energy at “Dance, Dance, Dance” Saturday, March 27, 7:30 pm at the Koger Center.

The evening features violinist Michi Wiancko performing the Margaret Brouwer Violin Concerto composed especially for Wiancko. Brouwer will fly to Columbia to attend the concert, providing a rare treat for guest artist, musicians and concertgoers alike.

The concert’s other works of fer a mix of music that was inspired by or used in the world of dance and has a notably upbeat, high– energy vibe throughout. The speedy, peppy, and witty music could lead to dancing in the aisles by the concert’s end.

Music Director Morihiko Nakahara begins the evening by loosening the orchestra up with the brief but spirited First Symphony by Prokofiev, often called the Classical Symphony.

Wiancko then takes the stage for the Brouwer Violin Concerto. Commissioned by the City- Music Cleveland Chamber Orchestra for former Concertmaster Wiancko, the concerto was composed and premiered in 2007. Brouwer infused it with elements of pop– folk and trip–hop, as well as the Gypsy dance music in the final movement , at Wiancko’s

Tradi t ional French dances are featured in Maurice Ravel’s witty Le Tombeau de Coup erin, written to honor fal len French comrades from World War I, before the evening closes with the rousing music of dance episodes from Bernstein’s 1944 classic “On the Town,” a wildly successful musical revived many times over on stage and screen.

Nakahara presents the popular pre–concert lecture Classical Conversations at 6:30 pm in the Koger Center auditorium, offering insight into the evening’s program. Brouwer and Wiancko are to discuss how today’s American composers and performers are trying di f ferent things to make classical music exciting and relevant to modern audiences.
