The Glenforest School Student Council put together a recycling program in which buckets were given to each class. Instead of simply throwing away paper, bottles, and/or cans, they were put into the buckets and recycled. This is part of the school “going green.”

During the month of December, students collected toys, games, and stuffed animals. The presents were presented to Epworth’s 80 abandoned, abused, and neglected students.

On January 12 through February 11, student council collected athletic shoes to be given to children around the world who do not have shoes to wear through a program called Samaritan’s Feet.

The varsity boy’s basketball coach walked the sidelines without shoes and socks. He did this for the final 13 games of the season. He even coached barefoot in the State Championship game. During Martin Luther King Jr. weekend he walked eight miles barefoot to the school’s cross–town rival January 15. More than 700 pairs of shoes and $1,043 were collected.

The student council participated in the Adopt– A–Highway Program. Four times a year council is responsible for picking up litter along a mile stretch of road near the school

In April, student council will sponsor the 2nd Annual Wii Care movement marathon event. This event will be used to raise money and awareness for those who suffer from the effects of cystic fibrosis.

To help raise awareness for multiple sclerosis the student council will once again walk in the Annual MS Walk in Columbia. This event will be held on May 1 at the Columbia Museum.

To help raise awareness for autism, the student council will once again walk in the Annual Strides for Autism in Columbia. This event will be held on May 15 at Finlay Park.

School Service

Every Thursday, the student council holds a weekly meeting with the entire school. During this time upcoming events for the week, sports news, and the amount of time students have earned for Fun Friday are discussed.

Members of the student council helped make Christmas cards for the lower school students.

As part of the student council’s responsibilities, the bulletin boards around the school are decorated through the year. These bulletin boards display pictures of activities and upcoming events for students to be involved in during the year.

In August, the student council held a back to school cleanup day with the parents to help new and returning teachers prepare their rooms and spruce up the campus. They picked up trash around the campus, moved furniture, painted paws in the parking lot, and did yard work.

In August, all student council members attended the school’s annual Open House. They led tours around the school for new students and their parents, as well as answered questions.

In the spirit of giving, the student council put together fruit baskets, given to all of the teachers at Glenforest School the week of Thanksgiving. Yearly Events

The student council participated in the SCISA summer workshop held at Heathwood Hall. The schools participated in cooperative team games and a ropes course.

As part of Fun Friday, the student council took time out to honor the elementary students. They held an event called Hollywood Friday where each student walked down the “red carpet” while student council president announced his or her favorite food and favorite activity.

The president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary, along with advisor, attended SCISSA’s Fall Convention held at the State House.

In preparation for the Annual Cow Chip Bingo Festival, the student council held a Miss Cow Chip Pageant in September. The male students and teachers volunteered to dress up as ladies and compete for the title of Miss Cow Chip. Each boy had the help of his female friends for makeup and dresses.

Cow Chip Bingo Festival was held September 12 as a fundraiser for the athletic program.

The school’s annual alumni game was held January 9. Student council members were in attendance and helped run the concessions stand.

Student council set up a spirit week February 8–11 leading the SCISA Basketball State Playoffs. All students were encouraged to participate.

The student council took over game day operations for the boys and girls middle school and JV boys basketball games. Responsibilities included setting up the gym, collecting gate admission, announcing the line–ups for each team, selling concessions, taking pictures, keeping the scorebook, and operating the game clock.

Members of the student council get together and create a scrapbook that is filled with the social events, community services, and fundraisers they participated in throughout the year. The scrapbook is then submitted to the scrapbook competition held at the SCISSA Spring Convention.

All members of the student council and their advisor will travel to Myrtle Beach in March to attend the 2009 SCISSA Spring Convention.

Student council advisor, senior members, and those not running for re–election organize the spring student council elections. These elections are attentively planned for late–April early May. They oversee the voting process and make sure that all campaign rules are followed.

The 12 members of the student council sold raffle tickets for an 8G iPod Touch, car charger, and silicone case. The money was used for the spring conference beach trip.

The student council will hold a school wide yard sale and car wash in May. The gym will be divided into sections with a table for a $15 fee. The outside area will also be divided into sections for a $10 fee with no table. There will be concessions and a car wash. The money will be put into the budget for 2010–2011.

On the last day of school, the student council will help put on field day activities. Activities will include volleyball, kickball, and other team activities that all students can participate in.
