Heathwood Hall’s Mary Bond Bailey takes a shot in front of Ben Lippen’s Abby Alfrey.
Heathwood Hall’s Erin Ress sprinted down the left side of the field just by a Ben Lippen defender and launched a left–footed crossing pass as she slid to the ground. The pass inched by Ben Lippen’s diving freshman goalkeeper, Merry Anna Cates, and found Erin’s older sister Logan who punched it in the back of the net for her second goal of the night. It was the fifth and final goal for the Highlanders as they shut out the Falcons 5–0 at Heathwood Hall Tuesday night, March 16.
Fittingly enough, it was Erin, an eighth grader, who got the scoring started barely one minute into the match. She took an inbounds pass from the left side of the field deep in Ben Lippen territory and poked in a right footer to the upper left side of the goal.
Barely five minutes later, Heathwood’s Lizzie Weston booted a free kick from midfield to a charging Mary Bond Bailey. She took the ball and placed it perfectly in the left side of the net to give the Highlanders a 2–0 lead.
Heathwood Hall’s Logan Ress is pursued by Ben Lippen’s Lanie Dreyer.
The Falcons got a couple of quick shots off in the tenth and eleventh minutes, but the Highlanders continued to apply pressure getting off 12 shots to the Falcons’ four – most of which were corralled easily by Heathwood keeper Lauren McCoy.
Cates battled admirably for Ben Lippen collecting five saves in the first half. She thwarted one breakaway diving in front of Bailey to stop a sure goal in the 21st minute, but Bailey couldn’t be stopped when she placed a shot perfectly in the top left corner of the net from just outside the box to give Heathwood a 3–0 lead seconds before halftime.
Heathwood Hall’s Erin Ress tries to get by Ben Lippen’s Brittany Wilund.
The Falcons came alive a bit to start the second half rattling off three shots from freshman Brittany Wilund before the 51st minute, but senior Logan Ress put an end to the Ben Lippen momentum. She broke behind the Falcon defense and launched a shot from in close. Cates was able to knock it down, but Ress got the rebound and blasted it to the back of the net for a 4–0 lead.
Heathwood coach Curtis Player began emptying his bench in the 68th minute, which allowed the Falcons to finally apply some consistent offensive pressure. They rattled off five shots, but McCoy rose to the challenge collecting six saves For Heathwood.
