T. Keith Legare brought scouting to S.C.
Left (A Silver Loving Cup, awards including the Silver Beaver award were given to Legare for his work with the Boy Scouts. Below is the inscription on the cup.
The Boy Scouts are observing nationally their 100th birthday. Boy Scouting pioneer, the late T. Keith Legare is credited with introducing Boy Scouting to South Carolina in 1912. The first troop meetings took place in City Hall. The group later became known as Troop Five of Boy Scouts of America.
Legare devoted over 50 years of volunteering to scouting. His family has preserved some of his awards and other memorabilia including a Silver Loving Cup (inscription on the right). He also earned the Silver Beaver award, which is the highest Scouting award given by a local Scout council. He received the Silver Beaver Award in 1932, the first given in SC. It is pictured on the right.
Troop Five still meets at Shandon Presbyterian Church. Many leaders in our community are products of scouting and its character building program. Legare was described by one businessman, “He brought great leadership to scouting. He was an inspiration.”
