Photo by Jim Marczesky0 Mitchell Deter led all scorers with 26 points as the Ben Lippen Falcons scored an easy 68–50 win over the visiting Cardinal Newman Cardinals on Tuesday, February 2.

The Falcons (17–7, 4–2) stormed out to an 11–3 lead behind Deter and Gray Welborn, who combined for nine points in that run. The Cardinals (9–13, 0–7) closed to within 12–7 at the end of the quarter behind six points from Timmy Cunningham.

In the second quarter, six different Falcons scored to help Ben Lippen extend its lead to 23–9 before Michael Maracich hit back–to–back three pointers to close the gap. Jason Joye’s rebound and basket at the halftime buzzer got the Cardinals to within nine, 29–20, and gave them hope going into the locker room.

Deter and Gabe Smith made sure that the hope was short–lived. The duo scored all 17 of Ben Lippen’s points in the third quarter, while the Falcon defense forced the Cardinals into turnovers and bad shots. The Falcons led 46–33 at the end of the period.

Cardinal Newman tried to get back into the game, closing the deficit to 53–42 after Matt Erdman made a baseline jumper, but Deter and Derek Snelgrove scored the next seven points to up the lead back to 18, and the Falcons cruised from there.

Smith scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds, and Welborn had 10 points and five rebounds. Cunningham, Maracich, and Austin Ajukwa each scored eight points to pace the Cardinals, and Maracich and Michael Collins each dished out five assists.

Ben Lippen host Hammond for Senior Night on Friday, February 5, while Cardinal Newman hosts Augusta Christian at its Coming Home festivities the same evening.
