Matthew McClam scored 16 points to lead the Hammond Skyhawks to their first region win of the season, a 63–60 victory over the host Cardinal Newman Cardinals on Tuesday, January 19.

The game was close from the beginning with Cardinal Newman taking an 11–10 lead after the first period. The second quarter was more of the same with Hammond finally taking a 24–22 halftime lead on McClam’s three pointer at the buzzer.

The Skyhawks (4–10, 1–4) stretched the lead to four points at the end of the third quarter on a three–point play by Hunter George at the end of the period. The Cardinals (9–10, 0–4) closed to within one point early in the fourth but could get no closer. Hammond turned up the defensive pressure and extended the lead to 48–41 with just over two minutes left and from there hit enough free throws to keep the Cardinals at bay.
