The first quarter was close with Cardinal Newman (6–9, 2–2) taking a 9–8 lead. Both teams exhibited balanced scoring, and Alex August’s free throws gave the Lady Cardinals the lead going into the second period. The Lady Skyhawks (6–10, 1–4) then went cold.

Katie Hood’s basket early in the second quarter pulled Hammond to within one at 11–10, but Hammond did not score again until midway through the third period. By then, August and Molly Rainwater had scored nine straight points to extend Cardinal Newman’s lead to 12. After three quarters, the Lady Cardinals led 26–13.

August and Rainwater shared scoring honors for the Lady Cardinals with nine points each. Georgia Theodore led the Lady Skyhawks with 10 points, all in the second half.
