Young men achieve highest rank in scouting
Eastminster Presbyterian Church Troop 10 and the Indian Waters Council presented Eagle Scout Awards to (l–r): Jay Bowen, Frank Beal, and Clif Kitchens
Three young men received the highest rank attainable in the scouting program during a ceremony at Eastminster Church January 10. James Johnson Bowen, son of John and Kathy Bowen; Frank Shouse Beal III, son of Betsy and Skipper Beal; and John Clifton Judy Kitchens, son of Dial and Clif Kitchens; each received the Eagle Scout Award. All three men have accomplished much more than can be listed in this article.
Bowen is a senior at Hammond School. Among his many activities, Bowen lettered in football, is on the A/B Honor Roll, involved in Young Life and his Campaigners Bible Study group, and volunteered the past two summers to serve on a work crew in Florida. For his Eagle Project, he planned, organized, and supervised the restoration of James Henley Thornwell’s family gravesite in Elmwood Cemetery and the family gravesite of the Rev. John Lafayette Girardeau. He completed this project with the help of friends and family scrubbing and cleaning all the tombstones in both plots. They also cleaned and painted the iron fence. Both Thornwell and Girardeau were noted pastors at First Presbyterian Church.
Beal is a senior at Cardinal Newman High School where he has played soccer, tennis, basketball, and been on summer swim teams. Before Cardinal Newman, he attended Christ School where he was on the Honor Roll, Student Activities Committee, Young Republicans, Political Science Discussion Group, and Model Congress. He played a roll in “Guys and Dolls,” and attended Palmetto Boys State. This past summer he served as a troop guide at Camp Old Indian.
For his Eagle Project, he built benches, a firepit, and did landscaping around a lake at Christ School. The lake is ringed by hiking and biking trails and is enjoyed by students and faculty.
Kitchens is a senior at Hammond School. He is a strong student and is a member of the varsity tennis tema and sporting clays team. He attended Palmetto Boys State and was appointed to the Court of Appeals. He has been on two mission trips, srved on a Youth Advisory Committee, and is active in Young Life.
Kitchens Eagle Scout Project involved updating the census of graves in the churchyard at First Presbyterian Church. This information is now on the church website. He and his crew also rebuilt the Battery Benches found throughout the churchyard.
