When The Timbuktu Academy decided to raise funds for the school, they reached out to the community. And the community reached back.

The academy, which began in 2008 for at–risk students, sold homemade dinners for its December open house and raised more than 400 dollars. Co–founder of the school, Dr. Abd’Allah Adesanya said the proceeds will help pay off the oven the school purchased. Neighbors of the Eau Claire–based school and local businesses con- tributed to the sales. Jacob’s Barber Shop, Educational Wonderland on Broad River Road, Koger’s Autobody, and Bilal’s Produce are among the businesses that contributed to the fundraiser.

Year–round gourmet tea sales are another method the school is using to fund daily operations. Boxes of tea cost seven dollars.

That’s why Timbuktu Academy is working hard in its ongoing project to build solar panels on the roof of the shed students are building behind the school.

Adesanya said the Ridgewood neighborhood association, local non–profit organizations, local businesses, and residents are primarily supportive of the project. “The idea of a solar energy initiative for our neighborhood is thus far a welcome one,” he said.

The Timbuktu Academy will also offer Scholastic Assessment Test preparation on Saturdays starting in January.
