Blue Devils sweep Flora
The Dreher boys basketball team claimed one holiday gift a little early.
The Blue Devils earned bragging rights for the year against their neighborhood rivals, A. C. Flora, with a 71–61 road victory on Dec. 18. The win, combined with the 82–63 victory on Dec. 1, gave Dreher the sweep of the season series.
In addition, the victory in the Blue Devils’ last tune–up before the Chick– fil–A Tournament continued the team’s early season roll.
“I’d have to be pretty conceited to not be satisfied with 10–1, but there were a couple of games we were fortunate to win,” Dreher coach Jon Richards said. “However, these guys have the confidence in each other.”
That confidence manifested itself against the Falcons in the form of patience and effective quick strikes.
Unlike the team’s first meeting in which A.C. Flora wilted against Dreher’s full–court press and the game turned one– sided early, the Falcons led after one quarter and led by as many as seven in the second before the Blue Devils struck.
The keys to A.C. Flora’s success were its ability to attack both boards (the Falcons had eight offensive rebounds in the first quarter) and to hold Dreher to 8 of 22 from the floor in the first 13 minutes.
“Sometimes, like tonight, we hit early and then everyone starts missing,” Richards said. “That turns it into a different game.”
The Blue Devils built some momentum with a 14–2 flurry to take a five–point lead at intermission. Then they delivered the decisive blow at the start of the third quarter.
“We scored a couple of baskets and that allowed us to get into the press,” Richards said of the 9–2 run that built a 12–point lead. “We gave them a little different look on the front end of the full–court press (after halftime) that caused them some problems. But, I’m not satisfied with our defense; we have a ways to go.”
The source of Richards’ dissatisfaction was the Blue Devils didn’t put the game away. A.C. Flora never drew closer than nine, but Dreher never led by more than 14.
Chris Brown led Dreher with 21 points including 14 in the second half. Quayshun Hawkins added 11 and Dominic Boyd contributed 10.
Matthew Howard led A.C. Flora (4–2) with 20 and Marquis Simuel added 11.
