Forest Acres is in excellent fiscal condition

Amanda Colgate, Young CPA of the Year by SCACPA Amanda Colgate, Young CPA of the Year by SCACPA The December 8, 2009 Forest Acres City Council meeting began with invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Charles Fetner. November minutes were unanimously approved without changes. Frank Brunson, Curtis Rye, Ginger Dukes, Lee Holloway, Charles Fetner, Shell Suber, and Mark Williams were present.

Mayor’s issues • The Gill’s Creek Walking Trail design plans fully approved. • Final plans on Citadel and Idalia park plans expected to be ready before January. • SCDOT grant is being examined to see if it can be used for The City Clock project. • Shaun Greenwood has filed formal notice to all residents regarding new Roll carts regulations for Brookwood Court. • Christi Morgan from Chick–Fil–A reported on contributions to businesses, schools, and charities within Forest Acres and revisited the request to be part of FARMA.

New business • Amanda Colgate was recognized, out of 900 people, as Young CPA of the Year by SCACPA. • An Amendment of point of sale statutes approved. • The audit for Fiscal Year 2008–2009 was presented by Bill Hanock. The city is in excellent fiscal condition. • A presentation by District 2 Education Foundation on fall Literature and Arts Festival was given along with major thanks for financial aid from the city of Forest Acres.

Old business • An ordinance to make a temporary section providing for sale of property consisting of a portion of the right of way of Arlene Drive was approved. Mr. Holloway has drafted appropriate documents.

City administrator’s report • The DOT has indicated that the Transportation Enhancement Grant is not appropriate to build a walking trail as the purpose of the project is primarily recreational rather than transportational. • Speed humps have been installed on Brentwood Drive. • A new building official, Fred Smith, will soon join the City of Forest Acres. Smith has 31 different certifications in his field. • Forest Acres brochures have arrived and are available. • Talks with the SCDOT to see if benches can be placed in the right of way of Forest Drive and Beltline Boulevard. • The annual Christmas bonus for City employees has been authorized.

Police chief ’s report • Crime rates are noticeably lower than usual. • Cold Winter’s Day 5–K coming up.

Community forum • Carol Kososki pointed out that Forest Acres was thanked generously during the Columbia City Ballet performance. Kososki also noted that this year’s Arbor Day festivities at Crayton Middle School top any previous celebrations.

Council items • Councilman Charles Fetner said the Christmas Tree atop Midtown looks magnificent and extended thanks to all those involved in the Sweet Seasons festivities, mentioning how marvelous he found the event.

Council was adjourned for an executive session and will meet again January 12.
