WWI exhibit continues at the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum
Due to popular demand, the administration of the museum has decided to extend its two World War I exhibits into 2010. Both exhibits were originally scheduled to close December 6, 2009. “World War I in 3D” will now be open through January 30, 2010, and “Forgotten Stories: SC Fights the Great War” will be open through September 21, 2010.
“World War I in 3D” features a 20–minute 3D film of over 80 stereographs on a continuous loop. This exhibit combines 3D stereograph viewing with modern technology to display the Keystone View Company collection published to commemorate World War I. Each stereograph has been digitally processed to display in the originally– intended format, but in a theater setting.
“Forgotten Stories: SC Fights the Great War” focuses on the military history of the war, strategies used during it, and how the war is a part of South Carolina’s military tradition. The exhibit themes examine various aspects of the war such as the forgotten story of the African–American 371st Infantry Regiment, trench warfare, the use of artillery, the new use of airplanes, Medal of Honor winners from SC, and the American Red Cross. The exhibit also features over 200 artifacts and lifelike mannequins.
Founded in 1896, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area. The museum focuses on South Carolina military history from the Revolutionary War to the present War on Terror.
