It’s not a criticism; It’s an observation
South Carolina made national news again last week. A woman found a neighbor’s cow in her swimming pool. Thank God. The last time South Carolina and livestock made national news, it was embarrassing.
A few weeks ago, a man from Longs got us in the spotlight because he really, really, really liked a horse down the road. More than once. He was arrested and later apologized to the family involved. No word on whether he apologized to the horse or at least offered to buy dinner.
The Palmetto State can’t seem to keep out of the national stupid news spotlight. The problem, along with the fact that we have an abundance of people who are capable of producing such stories, is that it is really hard to move the spotlight once it has captured you. When you become the go–to place for weirdness, someone is always looking for new stories. Our political scene alone will keep us on “The Daily Show” for years.
The Charleston County Republican Party censured one of its members recently, but not one you’d expect. With Governor Sanford, Joe Wilson, and Jim DeMint all begging for a spanking, the Holy City Republicans censured Lindsay Graham, in quite an upset.
Governor Sanford has taken moral arrogance to a new level with his recent South American escapades and is now doing the same with financial arrogance. After preaching fiscal responsibility for years, it seems he only meant us, not him. He is on the verge of being investigated for financial wrongdoing by a state ethics commission.
Wilson went from a second string legislator to a front runner for a Fox News Guest Commentator after retirement by calling the President of the United States a liar in the Halls of Congress and on national TV. Even though he was incorrect in his claim, Wilson has added more than two million dollars to his re-election war chest by folks who appreciate the congressman putting Obama in his place.
Jim DeMint, evidently jealous about all the attention his South Carolina counterpart is receiving, has devised a perfect plan to appease voters without actually doing anything. Ole Jim has initiated a term limits bill in Congress; one that will go nowhere.
By offering a doomed bill, he can tell the folks back home how hard he tried to get the bill passed next election. Term limits have about as much chance of approval as auditing campaign contributions. The best part; since the Democrats are currently in charge, DeMint’s fellow Republicans can vote for the bill and blame its failure on the other party.
With these three politicians offering television fodder galore, you’d think the Charleston Republicans would be mad at them. But they found someone who offended their sensibilities even more. Lindsay Graham, that scoundrel and turncoat who wants to reach some agreement about such frivolous issues as climate change and dependence on foreign oil, is the subject of their censure. He wants to compromise with Democrats.
So stay proud, South Carolinians, we are going to keep getting that type exposure for some time. As long as we keep electing them, the rest of the country will keep making fun of them.
