The Cardinal Newman Cardinals made it one for the thumb at Heathwood Hall Saturday, November 7, winning their fifth consecutive state cheerleading championship .

The Cardinals, performing last in the AAA competition, had to weather challenges from Hammond, Augusta Christian, and Pinewood Prep, but the experience of the Cardinals won out in the end. Their cheerleaders performed one of the most difficult routines of the competition and did so very cleanly.

After the performance, the crowd was electrified, and the only drama was who would take second. That honor went to Augusta Christian, as Hammond, state runners–up the last few years, fell to fourth behind Pinewood Prep.

Coach Ellen Jennings was very pleased with her squad’s performance and is glad to send her senior captains, Courtney Alexander, Christine Egan, Katherine Gaulin, Chelsea Goodwin, and Victoria Harvey, out with one final title.
