2009-11-06 / Society

Donald Herbert Robinson, M.D., slipped comfortably from his body of 91 years Monday, October 26, 2009. He was a faithful supporter of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, Contemporary Issues Class and Book Club, the members of which he loved dearly. The story of his life is colorful and adventurous, sprinkled with world–wide travel, teaching, writing, and generously servicing others as physician and philanthropist.

He was lovingly reared by his parents, George and Ruth Wolfe Robinson in Philadelphia. His leadership at Cheltenham High School, Grove City College, and Drexel University (1940s), and his post Doctorate degree from Johns Hopkins University were a matter of pride to him.

Major D. H. Robinson, Medical Corps U.S., served in the Eighth Arm in Korea in the 1950s, receiving the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. During the 1960s, his vocation was the medical director of Standard Oil of California, moving to the Panama Canal Zone (1963–1965).

In 1967, Dr. Robinson adopted South Carolina as his project and home. Here he served as chief of Industrial Health at DHEC (1967–1977). In the 1980s, he worked in Lancaster and Fort Mill as area medical director of Springs Industries.

In addition to a number of contributions to professional journals and authoring three books, Donald began to write the newspaper column “Robinsons on Parallel” publishing in many newspapers statewide, currently running in the Twin

Ci ty News. An avid lover of opera and a student of human evolution and astrophysics, he amazed his family and friends with his knowledge.

Don is mourned by his wife of 20 years: Jane Lawther; children: Jeff Robinson (Nadine), Steve Robinson (Cathy), and Margaret “Meg” Robinson; mother of the children: Sarah Robinson; grandchildren: Isabella and Emma Robinson, Tracy Risinger, Troy Risinger (Krystal), and Beth Sessions; great–grandchildren: Katie Hepp, Cassie Irvin, Trenton and Trevor Risinger; beloved in–laws: Richard and Cindy Wilcoxon, Linday, Elizabeth, John, Emily, and Jeffrey, Mary, Mark, and Max Obringer; father–in–law: Francis Wilcoxon.
